Country: Italy Region: Marche Denomination: Marche IGT Grapes: 100% Bordò (Alicante o Grenache) Aging: 32 months in barrique Alcohol content: 14.5% One of the two iconic wines produced by Oasi degli Angeli, Kupra is the most famous and desired in the face of the exceedingly limited production compared to Kurni and the use of a grape, locally called Bordò, which is none other than Alicante, a biotype of Grenache, which has set the course for a small, but increasingly nourished, movement of Piceno producers who make this grape their boast of excellence. Cultivated within a vineyard with a total extension of 1.50 hectares, facing south at about 350 meters above sea level, insisting on loose soils with high skeleton, Bordò’s vines, with an average age of more than one hundred years planted using the “a conocchia” sapling technique with a density of about 6000 vines/ha, present very limited yields both due to the winery’s will and to an inevitable reduced production in the face of the age of the plants. Oasi degli Angeli’s vineyard management is completely natural: the complete absence of pesticides and herbicides is complemented by the extensive use of natural products that are often difficult to find on the market but necessary to preserve the winery’s biodynamic footprint. After careful manual selection of the clusters and crushing, the grapes undergo a 2-3 week alcoholic fermentation in concrete before racking into barrels where the wine rests for an additional 32 months before release to the public. On tasting, Kupra has a red color between ruby and garnet and a broad olfactory bouquet that ranges from jammy black berries to violets and dried roses, and then hints of vanilla and sweet spices. Its full majesty emerges in the mouth, with a perfect balance of softness and hardness such that it fully fills the palate before a clean and infinitely persistent finish. If the Kurni reaches remarkable heights in terms of sensory experience, Kupra goes far beyond, entering the Olympus of iconic wines, to be tried at least once in a lifetime, to be collected given the very limited production and to be enjoyed to the full, in meditation or in company given its splendid exceptionalism.
