Medieval Crusaders Era, silver cross pendant with integral suspension loop. The front is decorated with linear decorations on the ends and four smaller crosses in the centre. This is a variation on the Jerusalem cross, where the four crosses are placed in each quarter of the larger cross.
The cross pendant is strung on a modern leather jewellery cord with clasp.
Total length: ± 48 cm
Height: ± 26,3mm (including suspension loop)
Width: ± 16 mm
Condition: good solid condition and wearable (new jewellery cord). Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.
The origin of the five-fold cross originates from the 11th century and it was the coat of arms of Godfrey of Bouillon (1060-1099). He was a pre-eminent leader of the First Crusade, and the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Cross was used as the emblem and coat of arms of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from the 1280's.
It is designed as a large cross with smaller crosses in each of its angles, and it is seen to represent as the Five Wounds of Christ. In an alternative version the large cross represents Christ, and the four smaller crosses are the four Evangelists.
