Known for his revivalist approach to classical Japanese painting, Ryuko’s works often reflect a deep reverence for traditional themes and techniques. The artwork on this scroll features a harmoniously composed landscape with a beautifully illustrated tree, behind which a man is depicted enjoying a peaceful nap in a traditional house, further accentuating the calm and quietude of the scene. The skillful calligraphy on the left complements the delicate ink painting, demonstrating Ryuko's expertise in both textual and visual expressions. Ryuko's signature, accompanied by his red seal, adds a mark of authenticity, placed prominently at the top of the painting. The scroll is in a condition that is respectful of its age and provenance, with signs of wear including some staining and creasing, as well as dust marks and curling, all of which are detailed in the photographs provided. The scroll ends are made of wood, a common choice for scrolls of this period. The scroll comes with its original wooden box, indicating the care with which it has been kept over the centuries.
