This particular mask is believed to have a profound history, as it is said to be crafted in the image of the youthful wife of Kongō Ukyō Hisatsugu (also known as Magōjiro), a prominent figure linked to the progenitor of the Kongō school during the late Muromachi period. Traditionally called “Omokag” and passed down with this name, it has come to be known as “Magōjiro” over the years, a nod to its storied creator. While “Ko-omote” masks are commonly used to portray the innocence of young maidens in many Noh plays, “Magōjiro” represents a slightly older, married woman, embodying a mature, refined elegance. This mask conveys the idealized image of a woman with its serene and gentle expression, distinguished from the youthful innocence depicted by “Ko-omote”. The mask comes with a signature on the inside, attesting to its authenticity. It is enclosed in a silk bag and presented in its original wooden box, enhancing its collectible appeal. The mask bears marks of aging such as wear and stains. Please inspect the provided photos to assess the condition. Dimensions: approx.
