Very fine landscape painting "Recluse in secluded valley", signed - including tomobako - Tanomura Chokunyū (1814-1907) - Japan - Meiji Periode (1868-1912)

Tanomura Chokunyu was japanese style painter of the late Edo - Meiji period. He was born in Oita Prefecture during Bunka era. Chokunyu was adopted by Tanomura Chikuden at the age of eight. A child prodigy in painting, Tanomura Chokunyu originally modeled himself after the style of the already famous Tanomura Chikuden. After Chikuden's death, Chokunyu took up an intense study of imported Chinese paintings. He moved to Kyoto in the first year of the Meiji era, participated in the establishment of Kyoto Prefectural Painting School, and became the first principal in 1881. He opened the Nihon Nanga School in 1891 and established the Nihon Nanga Association in cooperation with Tomioka Tessai and Taniguchi Aizan in 1896. He died in 1907 when he was 93 years old. His works could be found in numerous museums worldwide, such as The Museum of the Imperial Collections Sannomaru, The British museum, University Art Museum Kyoto, Princeton University Art Museum, Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, Birmingham Museum of Art, Honolulu Museum of Art,...
