Heavy bronze temple bell 梵鐘 (bonshô) of traditional shape with an appealing echoing sound when struck and a beautiful brown patina.
At the top, the handle 竜頭 (ryûzu) is crafted in the form of two mirrored dragon heads. Around the upper portion of the bell, the pronounced bosses 乳 (chi) are arranged in three rows of four. Surrounded by embossed cartouches and with a flower-shaped striking panel 撞座 (tsuki’za).
Period: Japan – Late Meiji period/Taishô period (Early 20th century).
Dimensions:
Height 51.5 cm, Diameter 30.7 cm.
Weight 21.5 kg.
In a very good original condition. No inscriptions. The beautiful patina and some colour-variations are a sign that this bell has actually hung outside for quite some time (and thus has been used functionally). Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
