For auction is a rare complete set of "Ehon Ima Yo Sugata“ (Picture Book of the Modern Forms and Figures) Volumes I & II, Edition of 1916 by renowned Ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Toyokuni I, with writing by Shikitei Sanba. This pair of books is an invaluable window into the customs and fashion of the Edo period. Volume I showcases the lifestyles of townspeople and samurai, while Volume II provides a glimpse into the lives of women from entertainment districts such as Yoshiwara and Shinagawa. Each volume concludes with playful essays on women's customs of the time.
Shikitei Sanba, an influential Edo period writer, was also known for his local bookstore, pharmacy, and Ukiyo-e artistry. He gained fame for his comical works like "Ukiyo Bath" and "Ukiyo Bed." Utagawa Toyokuni I, a prominent Ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, is recognized for his actor prints, beautiful women portraits, and samurai pictures. Toyokuni's work was highly esteemed, rivaled only by the likes of Sharaku in beauty portraiture.
