Robert E. Peary - The North Pole - 1910

Scarce first edition, with fascinating text and interesting photographs plates Robert Peary's interesting account of his expedition in 1908-09 to the North Pole, upon which expedition he claimed to have reached the Pole. This was a controversial claim and was widely debated alongside a competing claim made by Frederick Cook. Peary's claim is still debated to this day, with some thinking that he simply just came within a few miles of the Pole. This volume explains Peary's 1908-09 expedition and his discovery of the Pole, an exciting account. A pleasing copy of the arctic explorer's travel narrative of the tundra. Item Description First edition of this well-illustrated work, detailing Peary's expedition to the North Pole. With an Introduction by Theodore Roosevelt. The book is illustrated with 115 illustrations from photographs, including photogravures of Peary, 2 more photogravures, 16 special plates, and 96 plates. Published by Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1910. Publishers' original sea-green cloth with border edges ruled in white, gilt lettering, and central gilt medallion featuring a bust of Peary on upper board. A white image of a polar bear on artic ice on the back cover is rubbed and faded. Top page edges gilt. Book Dimensions: 26 x 20 x 5 cm and Number of Pages: 326 including 3 Appendix and Index Weight over 1.6 kg without packaging Condition External covers are faded and marked, with wear to boards’ corners, edges, and to head and foot of spine. Some repairs to the spine cloth. Internally; the book in good condition. Old inscriptions dated 1915 on inside front cover page. Inner hinges are very good. All pages are tightly held at the gutter. Text, photographs and illustrations are clean and bright, with occasional foxing, and spotting marks to some pages (Please see pictures).
