Figur - Grabpfahl - Holz - Bongo - 120 cm - Bahr El Ghazal - Sudan

Ancient funerary post from Bongo tribe, South Sudan. Dimensions: width: 22 cm. Height: 120 cm. Depth: 26 cm. Weight: 12.1 kilos. Estimated age: 1890. Provenance and history of the piece: collected on 1949 in Kayango, Sudan, Bahr El Ghazal province, nowadays South Sudan, Western Bahr El Ghazal province, by comboni father Filiberto Giorgetti. This funerary post belonged to the group of funerary posts sited on the tomb of chief Ndinya, chief of the Kpango Bongo, representing his elder brother Kai. Acquired by us with a bunch of other funerary posts from South Sudan and a group of Bongo stones from Walter Giorgetti, relative of father Filiberto Giorgetti, on 2008. Overall condition: the statue shows deep erosion due to many years of wind, strong sun, rain, white ants. The wood (mahogany) is very hard, solid and heavy. The bottom part (originally inserted in the ground) has been partly eroded by humidity, worms, white ants and insects in general. Minor cracks are located all over the surface, as well as many signs of erosion, but the statue is entire and well preserved and looks amazing. General wear is evident. This is an unique museum piece, of inestimable value, not easy to find of this age, and not easy to find of this beauty. A true, unquestionable masterpiece. A professional invoice with a picture of the object, as well as the aforementioned description, will be delivered with the lot. Delivery by International Quick Pack.
