At left, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane gallops along the shore, gesturing angrily with his fan as he chases the young Taira samurai Atsumori, whose horse plunges into the water. In the account that appears in "The Tale of the Heike," after Kumagai captured the warrior, he realized that he was a young Taira prince, the same age as his own son. With his troops rapidly approaching, he tearfully beheaded the boy, promising to say prayers for him. The tragic story of Atsumori's death in his first battle became the subject of many Noh and kabuki plays. Here, the youth looks calmly over his shoulder at his enemy, a fleet of warships in the distance and a flock of plover rising up into the sky.
