Superb, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a Kanô School painting on gold leaf, depicting a lush landscape inhabited by cranes 鶴 (tsuru).
The scene is dominated by a majestic, ancient pine tree 松 (matsu), whose branches stretch expansively across the canvas. Nestled within the tree is a precious sight—a nest of crane chicks eagerly opening their beaks or curiously observing their surroundings. Vigilantly watched over by their parents from both the sky and the ground, these chicks are safely ensconced at the river's edge. Their home stands at the edge of a winding river adorned with peonies 牡丹 (botan), boasting large, soft pink blossoms.
The entire vista is encircled by rich, gold leaf clouds.
On the right side two 2-character name seals of which one reads 'Tessai/Tessei' 徹齊.
Rendered in watercolour and ink on paper and gold leaf.
The screen is bordered by two brocade silk trims – a slender ecru one, and a broad dark one, and is encased in a black lacquered wooden frame with protective hardware with engraved scrolling foliage design. -one corner piece missing-
Period: Japan – Late 18th century/Early 19th century (Edo period).
