Byôbu 屏風 (Faltwand) - Blattgold, lackiertes Holz, vergoldetes Metall - Japan - Späte Edo-Zeit (erste Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts)
An elaborate, large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a detailed genre painting on gold leaf, depicting a range of festive activities characteristic of the Edo period.
The scenes include horse races, lively games in bustling shopping streets, and people leisurely appreciating the cherry blossoms. These moments of enjoyment are often accompanied by indulgences in fine sake and smoking, whether on platforms over the river or nestled under blossoming trees, secluded by curtains for privacy. This thoughtful setup serves to shield the upper class from prying eyes, adding an element of exclusivity to these celebratory gatherings.
These diverse scenes are encased within rich gold leaf clouds, with mountains towering along the horizon, with a temple complex nestled in between on the right.
Sealed twice in the lower right corner with 2-character name seals in red: “Kôno” 高野 and “Shû” […] 宗[…].
Framing the panels are two elegant silk borders - a slender green brocade and a wider blue one adorned with a peafowl feather pattern, all set within a red lacquer wooden frame with protective metal hardware.
Period: Japan - Late Edo period (First half 19th century).
