Gandhara Schist Stone Head of Bodhisattva Maitreya - Great Example of Buddhist Art!
Circa 3rd century AD
This impressive grey schist stone head features the representation of Bodhisattva Maitreya, also known as the Buddha of the Future. Manifesting a serene countenance, the Bodhisattva's rounded face exhibits finely rendered facial features, with the head crowned by an elegant headdress. It comes with a modern, custom-made stand.
Bodhisattva Maitreya is a prominent figure in Buddhist tradition, revered as a future Buddha who will appear in the world to teach the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) and lead beings to enlightenment. The name "Maitreya" translates to "loving-kindness" or "friendliness" in Sanskrit. According to Buddhist belief, Bodhisattva Maitreya currently resides in the Tusita Heaven, awaiting the right time to descend to Earth and become the next fully enlightened Buddha.
