It features a captivating design with a solitary crane beneath a full-bloom cherry tree, meticulously executed in maki-e technique over a stark black lacquer background. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. The artwork extends from the lid to the sides, showcasing Jiko’s distinctive artistry and precision. The interior and the bottom of the box are finished in nashiji. Nashiji employs a similar method to maki-e, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface. A single partition inside is similarly finished on one side, with a black lacquer reverse. The crane is accompanied by Jiko’s signature next to it, ensuring its authenticity. Takesono Jiko, born in Wajima city in 1892, was a disciple of Suzuki Shigetaro. He gained acclaim for his unique design compositions and maki-e skills, making history by being the first from Wajima to be selected for the 10th Imperial Exhibition in 1929. He won multiple prestigious awards, including a special selection award in 1932 and the Hokuto Award in 1952. The box includes a silk pouch with a few spots, and an original wooden box with the artist’s signature and seal, providing additional provenance. Despite appearing unused at first glance, there are slight abrasions on the sides upon closer inspection, and minor wear on the feet, which are detailed in the photographs. Dimension: approx.
