Kawase Hyokan* A Kyoto lacquer artist who inherits the Omote-ha technique, which originated from Kimura Hyōsai, a Kyoto lacquer artist from the late Edo period. He passed through the first generation Sentaro Kawase, the second generation Shigetaro, and the third generation Atsushi (currently the 4th generation head is the 3rd generation representative Masaru Kawase). Kyoto lacquerware spread along with the tea ceremony culture. A characteristic of Kyoto lacquerware is that the wood is thinner than other lacquerware, giving it a delicate feel. It can be said that its thinness emphasizes its unique delicacy. Not only is it beautiful, but it is also durable, and no rice paste is used in the base layering process. Because the base contains a high proportion of lacquer, the lacquerware is highly durable and strong. However, since it contains a large proportion of lacquer, it is costly, and managing the curing of the lacquer is time-consuming.
