Quellinus and then apprenticed to John Frederik Hulk and Jan van Essen. In 1899 he settled in Laren, where he stayed until 1902. After that he lived and worked successively in Haarlem, Bussum and The Hague. The typical themes of the Laren School, especially the farmer interiors, would be a defining feature of his works even after his departure from Laren. He often painted mothers and their children. His style was strongly influenced by Scholers from The Hague, Jozef Israëls and Albert Neuhuys, as well as by Hein Kever. His work, particularly in the use of Clair Obscur, also bears witness to a thorough study of the old masters, more specifically Pieter de Hooch and Rembrandt.
Besides interior pieces, Bernard de Hoog also painted portraits, genre scenes, landscapes and flower still lives. He also painted light watercolours. His works were very popular in the USA, Canada and England, where he regularly held exhibitions and sold many works. He passed away in 1943 in the age 77 years.
