These locomotives were built as from 1919 onwards and remained in service until the 1980s. Both the locomotive Series Ce 6/8 II, as well as the later edition the Series Ce 6/8 III, have the nickname “Krokodil or Crocodile”. . Seven units of the Series Ce 6/8 II have been preserved and are still to be admired. Development and usage: With the electrification of the Gotthard line in circa 1920, the SBB commissioned new heavy articulated locomotives for this steep and winding route. Even before the details of the trials with the prototype of the Series Ce 6/8 I were available, the SBB commissioned the firms MFO and SLM to develop the Series Ce 6/8 II for hauling the freight transport on the Gotthard railway route. As during the development of the Ce 6/8 I they had expected problems with the connecting rods, the SBB commissioned the construction of 9 units of the Series Ce 6/8 II. This was a totally new design concept for a locomotive and not a redesign of the Ce 6/8 I. The Series Ce 6/8 II, in contrast to the Ce 6/8 I, consisted of three articulated sections. This had the smaller front and rear sections in which the electric motors were housed and a centre section that housed the transformers. The two electric motors each drive a blind axle, which with lateral connecting rods provide the drive on the axles. To negate the need to purchase new locomotives, a number of locomotives in this series (No’s 14251-14265) were upgraded by MFO with more powerful motors during the period 1941-1947. Due to the new motors it became necessary to raise the blind axle and the complex system of coupling rods above the axles. This led to an increase in performance from about 1650kW up to 2700kW. The naming of these types of locomotives was changed to Be 6/8 II and the upgraded locomotives were renumbered to 13251-13265. These locomotives achieved a maximum speed of 75 km/h. In the period 1965-1967 the locomotives (No’s.14267-14284) were converted for shunting In large marshalling yards. From 1968 onwards, the locomotives were decommissioned and scrapped. A number of these locomotives were transferred to museums.
