Rack - early 18th century
No torture chamber would be complete without a rack, known by various names the world over: the Romans knew it as 'Equuleus' (foal); the French called it 'Banc de Torture', its Spanish name is 'Escalera' (ladder), Germany has its 'Streckbank' (stretching rack) or 'Schlimme Liesel' (frightened Liesel), Italians called it 'La Veglia', and its nickname in Britain was 'The Duke of Exeter's Daughter'.
Whatever its name, it was a frightful machine used to 'stretch' the definition of punishment no end during the inquisition.
