Teppei Kaneuji (1978) - Γλυπτό, White discharge - 27 cm - καουτσούκ - 2015

Purchased in 2015 in an auction hosted by STPI (Singapore Tyler Print Institute) Museum director's wife in Singapore. TK donated 6 sculptures in a series. Acrylic case with Velvet bottom with black Lacquered wood base. One of a kind to own small pieces of the great artist, Teppei Kanji, who is known to be Andy Warhol of Japan. Each figure unique, the series represents a legion of TK's manga fantasy. Teppei Kaneuji delves into the phenomenon of widespread consumption of contemporary Japanese culture by utilizing materials derived from everyday life, random objects, and manga characters to fabricate sculptures that exude both a playful and ominous quality. Kaneuji amalgamates the remnants of excessive consumption to craft sculptures and prints in vibrant candy hues, featuring Manga-style lines that reflect the impact of the visually overwhelming, image-saturated environment in which he grew up. His renowned series, White Discharge, initiated in 2002, showcases intricate constructions combining action figures, plastic food items, and various miniature objects, coated in a gooey white resin. Despite their static appearance, these bricolage entities possess a dynamic essence, drawing viewers in with their amalgamation of disparate elements, whether physical or psychological. Through intricate arrangements, attributes are intertwined, rationalized, and rejuvenated, breathing new life into the assembled pieces. Born in 1978 in Japan, Teppei Kaneuji currently resides and works in Kyoto. He obtained a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Kyoto City University of the Arts in 2003. Kaneuji's works have been displayed at prestigious venues such as the Ichihara Lakeside Museum in Chiba, Japan; The Japan Society in New York, NY; Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo, Japan; Marugame Geniciro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art in Kagawa, Japan; Kyoto Art Center in Kyoto, Japan; Singapore Tyler Print Institute in Singapore; Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, China; Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe, Japan; Yokohama Museum of Art in Kanagawa, Japan; Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art in Hiroshima, Japan; Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Japan; Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, Hungary; Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan; National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan; and The Museum of Art, Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea, among numerous others. Kaneuji has been honored with accolades such as the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in Hong Kong (2016), the Best Young Artist Award from the City of Kyoto, Japan, and the Sakuya-Konohana Award. His works can be found in the collections of various esteemed Japanese institutions including the Yokohama Museum of Art in Yokohama, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art in Hiroshima, the Takamatsu City Museum of Art in Kagawa, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, The National Museum of Art in Osaka, the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in Toyota, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. Internationally, Kaneuji's pieces are held in collections such as the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia; the Ullens Foundation Collection in Beijing, China; and KADIST in Paris, France.
