A fine selection of three Near Eastern amuletic beads in the shape of a stylised seated animal, possibly a lion. The pieces are made from an orange carnelian of various shades with slight translucency and bands of white inclusions. The amulets are perforated horizontally for suspension. Hairline cracks to the pieces.
Near Eastern civilisations utilised a wide array of precious metals and semi-precious stones to create jewellery and amulets which would have been worn throughout life and death. Stones such as agate, carnelian, and turquoise, were valued for their delicate transparency and variety of vibrant colours. Depictions of animal figures were a popular choice, with creatures seen to be powerful or dangerous, such as lions and bulls, selected to represent the power of local deities and rulers.
