Coptic weaver's comb, circa 5th-7th Century AD.
Copts are a Christian ethnoreligious group indigenous to North Africa who have primarily inhabited the area of modern Egypt and Sudan since antiquity.
A weaving comb is used to compact each row of weaving into place, to create a strong and stable weave. This example is carved from a single piece of wood. Is rectangular in shape with short teeth and diagonal grooves at one corner. An old collection number '19838' is inked on the body, 10.5cm x 9.8cm. For a similarly shaped comb but with a long handle, see Brooklyn Museum, NY, accession number 05.330.
The multitude of scratches on the surface of the wood suggest that the object was actually used during the life of its owner.
