John D. Hunter - Memoirs of a Captivity among the Indians of North America - 1823

John Dunn Hunter (ca. 1796–1827), was a leader of the Fredonian Rebellion, the first attempt by Anglo settlers in Texas to secede from Mexico. Before that adventure, however, he had an interesting upbringing by Native Americans recounted in the present work. Hunter claimed to be ignorant of his birthplace and said that he was taken prisoner with two other children by Native Americans who either belonged to or were associated with the Kickapoo nation. He lived with the Kickapoo until 1816 but travelled widely during that time and received a good education. Not knowing his real name, he took on the name of an English benefactor, one John Dunn, 'Hunter' was later added due to his abilities in the field. This 'new edition' would appear to be the second edition. This copy contains the rare lithographed frontispiece by C.R. Leslie printed by Hullmandel, which was not present in the copy examined for the Wagner-Camp entry, or in the Library of Congress copy. Wagner-Camp notes that "Hunter's autobiography includes his story of a journey across the mountains to the Pacific Ocean, `on the south side of the Chok-a-li-lum (Columbia River)'." Wagner doubted the veracity of this account, although he accepted Hunter's description of life among the Kansas and Osage Indians as authentic. He claimed to have been abducted at an early age by Kickapoo Indians, but escaped to white settlements to get an education. He visited London where he was lionised in 1823-34 and then returned to America where he was murdered by Cherokees. The book's cover exhibits wear and rubbing, as depicted in the accompanying photos. The pages have small rips or missing pieces along the edges of certain pages. Also, there is significant foxing and discolouration present throughout the book, notably on the interior of both front and back covers, as illustrated in the provenance photo. Additionally, two pages appear to have been removed, as observed in the fourth photo. Extensive research and comparison with similar examples, however, reveal that no content from the actual book appears to be missing. Provenance: Engraved bookplate of Sir William Middleton Bart Shipped from France.
