Yatate 矢立 Portable Calligraphy Tool - Μελανοδοχείο - Χάλυβας

A "yatate" is a traditional Japanese stationery item used for writing, dating back approximately to the Kamakura period, when brushes were widely used as writing tools on battlefields. It was designed for carrying brushes and ink (inkwell) together, anticipating situations where writing might be necessary. The inside of the handle's cylinder is hollow, allowing for the storage of thin brushes. When you open the lid of the round inkwell, it is filled with cotton to soak up ink, and it was carried by hanging it from the waist using a string tied through a loop. When people needed to write on the go, they would casually take out the brush and write a few characters. Before the widespread use of fountain pens in Japan, from the Meiji era to the early Showa era, many people used yatate like this. While it was a highly practical stationery item for carrying ink and brushes efficiently, with the decline of brush culture and the decrease in the number of people wearing traditional Japanese clothing daily, the demand for yatate diminished, and now it has completely fallen out of use. This yatate is: 1) It comes with a thin brush and an outer bag. 2) It often has a design featuring "Tenpo Tsuho" (a type of old Japanese coin circulated from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period). 3) Material : Yatake is unknown, probably steel. Outer bag is unknown, probably cowhide. The instrument carries the weight of its years gracefully, with a natural patina, small scratches, stains, and signs of wear. There is a residue of dried ink inside, and the holder shows some looseness, details that speak to its authenticity and use. Please see the photos for a detailed view of its current state.
