Γανδάρα Schist Stone Panchika και Hariti

Gandhara Schist Stone Panchika and Hariti Circa 3rd-4th century AD This remarkable sculpture comprises schist stone heads of Panchika and Hariti, possibly fragments of a larger piece. Panchika, adorned with a turban, and Hariti, with an elaborate headdress, exhibit finely rendered facial features, including almond-shaped eyes, graceful noses, and small lips. Panchika is distinguished by a flowing beard and moustache. It comes with a modern, custom-made stand. Panchika and Hariti are deities found in Buddhist mythology, particularly in the context of Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. They are significant figures within the pantheon, embodying various aspects of compassion, protection, and fertility. Panchika, also known as Pancika or Panthaka, is a deity associated with wealth, abundance, and prosperity. In Buddhist mythology, Panchika is often depicted as a male figure adorned with jewels and symbols of abundance, such as overflowing treasure chests or a mongoose spewing jewels. As a guardian deity, Panchika is revered for his ability to bestow material wealth and ensure the prosperity of devotees. Hariti, also known as Kishimojin or Hariti-mata, is a maternal deity revered for her protective and nurturing qualities. Originally depicted as a demoness who preyed upon children, Hariti underwent a transformation after encountering the Buddha. She repented her actions and converted to Buddhism, becoming a guardian of children and a patron of motherhood. Hariti is often depicted with multiple children gathered around her, symbolizing her role as a protector of the young.
