【Product details】
Honchō Bushōden is a remarkable collection of biographies compiled by Shōtei Kinsui, featuring colorful woodblock prints by the illustrious Utagawa Yoshitora. Published in 1852 (Kaei 5), this work introduces historical figures known for their valor and strategic brilliance, such as Susanoo, Tomoe Gozen, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Musashibō Benkei, Imagawa Yoshimoto, and Takeda Shingen.
These military leaders played pivotal roles in Japanese history, with their brave legends and battles influencing countless works of art. For instance, Minamoto no Yoshitsune is celebrated for his victories in the late Heian period, particularly his heroism in the Battle of Dan-no-Ura. Imagawa Yoshimoto was a daimyo who controlled Suruga Province during the Muromachi and Sengoku periods, while Takeda Shingen, the renowned ruler of Kai Province, is still praised for his strategic brilliance and governance.
Utagawa Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was active in the late 19th century (from the Bakumatsu to early Meiji periods). He was skilled in warrior prints, large head actor portraits, and depicted beauties, prints of Yokohama, and prints of modernization. In 1849 (Kaei 2), he was penalized for satirizing Tokugawa Ieyasu, but by 1868 (Meiji 1), he had been ranked second in a nishiki-e artist competition.
