He studied at the Julian School and the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he received classes from the symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Matisse is known for his innovative use of color and form in his paintings, sculptures, and drawings. In 1952, Matisse created the “Nu Bleu” series. Composed of four works, these pieces were made from gouache papers in blue, then cut out and glued onto clear paper marouflé on canvas. Each work represents a naked woman sitting raising her right arm behind her head. This series is one of the most famous of Matisse and reflects his mastery in the use of color and form.
