Smart shipping helps by automatically generating some customs-related paperwork (e.g. CN22 forms for EU exports). However, you are still responsible for providing accurate information.
Once the buyer has paid, go to the relevant order page and add the customs info. We’ll pre-fill what we can, but you must review and complete all required details.
The customs info you’ll need to check or add includes:
- HS code: the Harmonised System code that classifies your object for customs purposes. The more specific the code, the more accurate the declaration. You can find the HS code using this website.
- Country of manufacture: where the object was made or found (not where it’s being shipped from). If you’re not sure, we recommend researching your object and selecting the country that you feel is the most likely country of manufacture or discovery.
- Quantity and weight: we’ll pre-fill the weight per object with the package weight. If there are multiple objects in your order, we’ll show the average weight per object by dividing the total package weight by the number of objects.
- Example: if the order contains 2 objects of 1 kg and 5 kg, the weight per object should be 3 kg.
- EORI or IOSS number: required for professional sellers shipping from or to outside the EU. If you don’t have one, you can apply for an EU EORI number. Applying for one is usually fairly quick and easy.
- GB EORI Number: professional sellers shipping to or from Great Britain need a GB EORI number. If you don’t have one, you can apply for a GB EORI number.
Smart shipping does not automatically handle:
- Providing your VAT number.
- Additional documents required for special categories (e.g. vehicles, alcohol, CITES objects).
Printing customs forms and shipping labels
- After saving the customs details, print the shipping label and attach it securely to the package.
- If customs forms are generated, print three copies of each form and place them in a documents enclosed pouch taped to the outside of the package.
- The forms are used by customs in your country, the destination country, and by the shipping company.
If no customs forms appear, it means the information was submitted digitally – in that case, you only need to print and attach the shipping label.
If you're not sure which documents to include, check with the shipping company or customs authority for the destination country.
Important to know
- Only professional sellers can use smart shipping to ship outside EU countries
- Visit the official customs website for the buyer’s country for the most accurate guidance.
- Contact your shipping provider directly for updates on a held or delayed shipment.
- Smart shipping can simplify parts of the process, but sellers are responsible for providing correct customs documentation.
- Buyers are responsible for paying any import duties or taxes.
Special cases to be aware of
- Switzerland, Norway, and the UK: These are outside the EU VAT/customs union. Full customs paperwork is always required.
- High-value shipments (> €1,000): Often require formal customs clearance with detailed invoices and declarations.
