Lyra - portable chimes

The lyra comes complete with carry strap, hammers and carrying case. The instrument is in new condition. Dimensions: Height 56 cm. Width 37 cm. A variant of the chimes like the ones used in a harmony, fanfare or drum band is known as a lyra or bell lyra. The lyra is a portable set of chimes that was designed in the 19th century for German fanfare orchestras. It consists of a row of metal rods that are mounted in a lyre-shaped U-frame on a wooden handle. The instrument is carried in a belt and held diagonally upwards, held with the left hand while the right hand plays the instrument with a metal hammer. The claves, like a piano, are organized in two rows and are hit with a mallet. The lyra has a high, tinkling tone and sounds very pervasive. Originally, the lyra was used especially in military bands used, later also in civil marching bands. Wear is consistent with the age and use. Will be sent by registered mail.
