Piet in 't Hout Junior (1879 - 1965) - Amsterdam; Gezicht op de Amstel met op de achtergrond de Willibrorduskerk

Beautiful Amsterdam cityscape with the old Roman Catholic Willibrordus church in the background. This makes it a historically interesting painting; it shows what the Amstel looked like at that time, full of activity with many (sailing) ships. The artist has used dark tones. It truly is a painting that fits into the tradition of the Hague school. The dark clouds, with the light that shines through on the water, give it a typical Dutch appearance. Signed in the lower right corner: "P in 't Hout jr". The painting is in good condition; however, it does have some crackle. It is therefore an (or almost is) antique. In the long term it would be good to have the canvas restretched. We estimate that the painting was painted between 1910 and 1930. The painting was recently cleaned and has a new varnish layer. The original frame is simple. In ivory with golden colour, in excellent condition and ready to be hung. The painting comes from a private collection. On the back of the stretcher is an old stamp of the artist (almost illegible) and in pencil the notation of Amsterdam and an address in the Statenkwartier in the Hague, on the Van Bleiswijkstraat 109. Piet in 't Hout was a student of Johannes and Pieter Stortenbeker. He painted landscapes, harbour views and still lifes. As a painter, he worked in the Hague, Brussels (1900) and Antwerp (1912). According to the Pieter Scheen (1981), he was also a church painter. That may have contributed to the fact that he chose this composition of the Amstel, with the famous Willibrordus church in the background. This church, the St. Willibrordus church outside the Veste, was a Roman Catholic parish church in Amsterdam, located on the corner of the Amsteldijk and the Ceintuurbaan in De Pijp, part of Amsterdam Oud-Zuid. It was the largest church of architect Pierre Cuypers. The church was used from 1873 to 1966 and was then demolished. The painting will be packed with care and shipped by registered mail.
