British stokes mortar bomb
This is a British stokes mortar bomb that’s obviously empty.
This stokes mortar was a British trench mortar invented by Sir Wilfred Stokes KBE which was issued to the British, Commonwealth and American armies, as well as the Portuguese Expedition Corps (CEP), during the second half of the first world war.
The 3 inch mortar is a weapon with smooth barrel and a snout for cutting the hearth. Although it is called a 3-inch mortar, its bore is really 3.2 inches or 81 mm.
British national units had 1.636 stokes mortars in service on the western front at the truce.
The serial numbers of the projectile are no longer fully visible. The cap is stamped with "ELEY LONDON, GASTIGHT".
The mortar projectile is about 47 cm long and weighs more than 3.5 kilograms kg.
The projectile has the expected signs of wear, pitting and light rust. The safety pins are missing.
This item will be well packed and shipped by registered mail.
