Dirk Filarski (1885-1964) - Landschap bij Vézelay

Dirk Filarski, along with Arnoud Colnot, is considered to be one of the founders of the Bergen School. He painted mainly landscapes, which he made during his many travels through (southern) Europe and North Africa. In Netherlands he was especially fascinated by the landscape around Bergen and Giethoorn. Filarski initially used light colours, after 1910 his palette changed into browns and greens and his work became powerful and expressionistic. This work was signed (bottom left) with only his last name and was created around 1948. Until 1938, he signed with his three initials and his last name. From that year on, he dropped the three initials and signed with only Filarski. It is a very expressionistic piece with strong tones. It is canvas affixed to panel (marouflé) which is very much an unique work which was painted outside. Filarski died suddenly in Zeist on 28 February 1964.
