Yatagan, museum piece, 2nd half of the 18th century Around the middle of the 18th century, yatagans, with their characteristic horn handles, lightly or heavily sweeping blades, were established in the Asian part of Turkey, in the Balkans and in northern Africa. Description: The handle has walrus bone on each side with four studs, ends of the handle are in the form of an ear. The top and bottom of the handle are set with 7 corals. Solid collar on the handle to finish, the collar leads towards the blade in long outstretched triangles. Bronze jaws, which close around the root of the blade, adorned with intricate, small plates, burled bands and 2 gemstones (tourmalines) set in cartouches. The whole handle is adorned with little plates on each side. Splendid, completely silver-inlaid Damascus blade, lightly curved at the back and heavily curved on the cutting side, (length 62 cm, width 3.3 cm) Fine silver-inlaid decoration with Ottoman ornaments in the middle of the blade. Wrought brass blade over the wooden core, finely decorated and embellished, the end of the sheath forms a gold-plated fantasy animal's head. Luxuriously crafted yatagan, it was one of the preferred weapons of rulers at the end of the 18th century. The sale, purchase and possession of weapons is subject to national laws and regulations.
