Born in Paris in 1881, Auguste-Jean Claire became a model designer in furniture fabric and wallpaper. He loved the countryside from which he drew his inspiration as it provided him with material for drawing plants, birds and flowers. He discovered Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei in 1910. Captivated by the village, he settled there in 1927 in a house that he had built on a higher ground. The 220-step staircase leads directly to the Sarthe. He took part in the Salon des Artistes Français in 1931 and received the gold medal outside the competition in 1935. He later became mayor of the village (1946-1953) where he died in 1970. His paintings include: "Cool mornings, summer splendours, autumn fairytales, stormy skies, etc. He caught all that nature has in store only for her true lovers." His works have been sold in Paris, Le Havre, Nantes, Rouen, Detroit, London, Florence and Sao Paulo.
