Ivory Christ - France - mid 18th century - Ivory - Second half 18th century
This remarkable, large-size ivory Christ figure, made in France around the second half of the 1700s, is mounted on a contemporary frame in carved wood, with gilding performed in later times.
The Corpus Christi displays a well-detailed anatomy: the head of hair, the veins in relief and a well-defined draping.
The sculpture's strong pathos and expressiveness hark back to the Baroque style that had many performers even in the 18th century.
The typically French frame is also from the 18th century with gilding likely dating back to the 19th century.
In good overall condition, it has some restorations to the hands/feet, a phalanx of the right hand is missing. The draping on the side has been probably replaced. (See photos).
The pictures are an integral part of the description.
