Ancient Madonna under a glass bell, from Puglia (1) - terra cotta, fabric - Late 18th century
18th century statue of Our Lady of Sorrows protected by an original bell jar on a wooden base. Height approx. 60 cm.
The bell jar, made of blown glass, was used to protect fragile and valuable items such as clocks, porcelain items,
For this it used to be called "cover" by the ancient glassworkers.
Its use dates back to the 18th century, but in the 19th century it became one of the most popular objects and almost characterized the furnishings of that century, especially in southern Italy and particularly in Puglia and Campania.
Its complete visibility favoured its diffusion and replaced other cases of sacred objects as display cases and glass cabinets.
Its base is in black painted wood, with a slot on its surface where the glass dome was placed.
