SHOE (Niels MEULMAN) (1967) - Fuck the Koning / Hail the Kooning

Known for his pieces all over the streetart world. Pioneer from Amsterdam, very well known within the scene. In the 80's he started as a real graffiti artist (as Shoe) and his tags were and are all over the world since. His work can be found in many streetart related books. Niels Shoe Meulman is a visual artist, known for his gestural paintings which reveal vivid traces of graffiti and calligraphy. He revolutionized the art of writing when he initiated the Calligraffiti movement, claiming “a word is an image and writing is painting”. Being a graffiti pioneer from Amsterdam, Shoe tagged along with New York counterparts such as Dondi White, Rammellzee and Keith Haring in the 1980s. Equally influenced by the great painters of Abstract Expressionism, he gradually found his own way to translate street attitude to gallery walls. Experimenting within the traditional medium of paint-on-canvas, but also unafraid to venture into new realms like conceptual installations and poetry, Niels Shoe Meulman keeps pushing the limits of Urban Contemporary. This is a unique piece, a comment on our royals (F*** the Koning means 'f*** the King') and Hail to William the Kooning, king of art. These 2 statements are perfectly intertwined. Nicely framed. Handsigned on the front and at the back. Original invoice available, bought at the Streetart specialised gallery Vroom & Varossieau in Amsterdam 2015. Shipment within the Netherlands and just over the border will be handled by ourselves, further away needs to be taken care of by an art handler/art shipment ( a special crate will be fabricated in that case).
