Jean de Renou - Dispensatorium medicum, contineus: Institutionum pharmaceuticarum lib. V ; de Materia medica lib. I - 1608

Colonia allobrogum: Ex typographia Jacobi Stoer, 1608. Small 8º [167 x 122 mm]. (78) + 1,115 + (50) pp. Good condition, some foxing. Some stains and antique notes. The frontispiece has an old restoration work. Somewhat short of margins with a little loss from some sheets (see in photos). First pages with worn edges. Last acidified sheets. Modern binding (early 20th century?) in parchment of the time. It’s impossible to collate this copy as we couldn’t find another copy in the collective catalogues (we presume it’s complete). Very rare edition. Few copies of this first edition were possibly published in the author's lifetime, but the most common existent copies (1623 onwards) were published posthumously. This makes our copy even more valuable. Important book for the history of medicine. Jean de Renou (1568-1620) obtained the title of physician at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris in 1598 and was physician to King Henry III. His pharmaceutical dispensary was a great success and was reissued many times in the first half of the 17th century. Ferguson [II, 254: ‘He overturned a multitude of popular errors about the virtues of plants and minerals, though he himself was not devoid of some erroneous notions.’].
