Paul Schokkaert (1907-1960) - Old fishing boat at Niewport

Paul Schokkaert was born in Sint-Amands on 21 May 1907. He is the great uncle of Mieke Coeckelbergh. He trained as a teacher and received a place at the "Brothers Marists" in Schaerbeek-Helmet. He was self-taught and enjoyed painting outdoors around the Scheldt and the Rupel, the shipyard, churches and chapels, and especially boats. After the war, he became an active member of the 'I Vierkant’ group in Puurs was founded. He was also a member of Kunstkring Kleurenweelde in Evere. He died 7 August 1960. The effortlessly blended rich colours, are lively and fresh, coupled with loose but solid brushstrokes. He painted mainly outdoors, water and boats being his great love. Light played a major Part in the way he depicted his subjects, best seen in his portrayal of water, as though flowing in the still picture. This painting is featured in the book about the artist.
