Voisin du célèbre château Mouton Rothschild, il appartenait depuis le XVIIème siècle à la famille d'Armailhacq dont il portait alors le nom : château Mouton d'Armailhacq. A partir de 1956, il s'appela successivement château Mouton Baron Philippe, puis, en 1975, château Mouton Baronne Philippe. Depuis 1989, la Baronne Philippine de Rothschild lui a rendu, en partie, son identité d'origine en le baptisant Château d'Armailhac.
