Andy Warhol (1928-1987) - 103.8 X 69.9 cm - Hand-colored - Flowers 1974

ANDY WARHOL Flowers, 1974 Silkscreen and hand-coloring with Dr. Martin's aniline watercolor dyes on Arches and J. Green paper ( with watermark ) Sheet: 103.8 x 69.9 cm (with full margins) Edition of 250 Hand signed with initials " AW " in front, signed again and numbered on verso lower left EACH WORK IS HAND PAINTED WITH DIFFERENT COMBINATION OF COLORS ! Co-published by Peter M. Brant, Castelli Graphics, and Multiples, Inc., New York (with their and the artist's ink stamps on the reverse lower right) Literature - Catalogue Raisonné This print is fully documented and referenced in the official Catalogue Raisonnés - Feldman & Shellmann "Catalogue Raisonné of Prints" page 86 number FS. 11.117 HISTORICAL NOTES This work marks a deviation from Warhol’s typical artistic style. Rather than showcasing the Pop Art technique that made him famous, here, Warhol appears to revisit his earlier, simplistic illustrative style. As such, the work alludes to his early career as a commercial artist, when his output mostly included hand-drawn advertisements for shoes and other consumer goods. In many of Warhol’s catalogue the artist is not present in the work, instead here by hand-coloring, shading, and adding subtle hues to some of the flowers and their parts, this series maintains Warhol’s personal touch, which is what makes this work so special.
