Beautiful Antique travel ink bottle with pen holder from Ottoman Empire, 19th century, TURKISH, called "divit".
The divit, as this Turkish pen holder with inkwell is called, was a 'must' for any educated inhabitant of the Ottoman Empire.
Wherever you were and whoever you were, you were always able to put something on paper.
Divit Consists of an elongated case for the pens and an inkwell attached to this pen case.
This gold-colored specimen is made of a copper alloy (brass).
The inkwell attached to the container has a shell-shaped lid.
The jar originally contained a wad of rough silk that soaked up and held the ink like a sponge. That way, no ink could run out.
