“Fichtel & Sachs” was founded in 1895 by Ernst Sachs and Karl Fichtel, in Schweinfurt Germany. Ernst Sachs was a racing cyclist and technical wiz, while Karl Fichtel was a business manager. They made hubs and spindles for bicycles and lorries. Ernst Sachs designed and patented a new bicycle hub, the “coaster brake” in 1894, which sold successfully, and also invented the “free-wheel” in 1903. Fichtel died in 1911, and Sachs, in 1932. The first Sachs engine did not come out until 1930.
