a generation earlier and was determined to illustrate his own work with
engravings of suitable quality. He employed one of the most distinguished
wood-engravers, John Thompson. With his son, also a master engraver the
pair set about working on the drawings supplied to them by Alexander Fussell.
The results were truly superb and has been described as a milestone in
ornithological literature."
