- Selected Works: 606 pp.; wood engraved portrait of the author, 27 coloured plates (5 folded), 218 ill. With small text booklet (24 pp.) Orig. green cloth portfolio; some damage at top and bottom of spine; inside of the portfolio a very nice coloured landscape with fruittrees spread over 2 panels. Very nice set in in very good condition; whereas the first book is not very rare in several languages, the portfolio is quite rare: only 5 copies in Worldcat (only in the USA) and none for sale. * Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin (1855-1935) was a Russian horticulturist who earned the praise of the Soviet government by developing more than 300 new types of fruit trees and berries in an attempt to prove the inheritance of acquired characteristics. When Mendelian genetics came under attack in the Soviet Union, Michurin’s theories of hybridization, as elaborated by T.D. Lysenko, were adopted as the official science of genetics by the Soviet regime, despite the nearly universal rejection of this doctrine by scientists throughout the world. ** This lot is part of an important collection that will be auctioned in the coming months through the Catawiki Collection Service.
