Cristine Balarine - Migration Journeys _ original abstract painting on fine art paper

Original, one-of-a-kind abstract painting by Cristine Balarine Size of the painting unframed: 20x30 cm Size of the painting including frame: 30 x 40 cm Medium: acrylics, pens and tempera sticks on fine art paper Ready to hang: yes Frame: fibreboard natural birch wood effect with acrylic glass Signature: verso, also signed Certificate Year: 2023 Finish: silky varnish with UV protection ABOUT THE PAINTING: This painting abstractly depicts the idea of migration, not necessarily in the literal sense, but touching on the metaphorical journey people undertake as they navigate the seasons of life, and about movement, about journeys. These are done on simple paper, reflecting upon the adventurous beginnings of immigrants, who, upon arriving on Brazilian land, often didn’t know how to write their names on paper. ‘To have papers’ also symbolise a settled status, a home. You see, the concept of ‘home’ is very elusive. Where is home? Where you come from or where you are? As I wonder about my own journey I tap into the history of this anonymous, tired lady who perhaps led to a generation of a better-off Brazilians. I pay my homage to her and look within myself to honour her sweat and courage, filling up some papers with seemingly chaotic revolving lines and saying: you’ve arrived. Can be combined with the triptych sold in this personal auction under the same name. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Cristine Balarine is an emerging Brazilian artist and architect based in between the Aeolian Islands, Sicily and Abu Dhabi. With a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Bartlett, University College London, and a background in Florentine Renaissance art history, Cristine’s art practice seeks to rebel from the rigour and ultra-rationalization of her architectural background in her large-scale abstract compositions. In addition to her independent visual art practice, Cristine has been involved as an architect in several projects with sustainability certifications, most recently as a site associate architect at the Zayed National Museum of the UAE by Lord Norman Foster. Cristine’s works have been selected to be exhibited in international galleries including the London Biennale in the UK, Florence Biennale in Italy and World Art Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Her passion for collaboration has led her to engage with musicians and DJs, merging visual art and music in immersive performances. She is currently establishing an open studio in the picturesque Aeolian Islands in Sicily where she will exhibit her solo works starting in winter.
