Ancient Greek, Attic Black-glazed Pottery Skyphos Circa 4th century BC This lovely black-glazed pottery skyphos rises from a circular base and culminates in a straight rim. The lower part of the skyphos features a tapering profile. Positioned on opposite sides of the cup are two D-shaped, horizontal handles. Skyphos, derived from the Greek word σκύφος, is an ancient Greek ceramic vessel, primarily utilized during the Archaic and Classical periods (6th-5th century BC). Characterized by two vertical handles, skyphos served various functions, functioning as a daily utensil for liquids and as a ritualistic offering vessel in religious ceremonies. The etymology traces back to the Greek language, where "skyphos" translates to "cup" or "goblet."
