Chaozhou Iron Branch Puppet-Intangible Cultural Heritage
A folk opera popular in Chaoshan area of Guangdong Province. Chaozhou Iron Branch Puppetry is derived from shadow puppetry. It was introduced to Chaozhou from southern Fujian with immigrants in the late Song Dynasty.
Chaozhou Iron Branch Puppetry is a type of stick puppet with a small body. Its main feature is that the puppet is operated by three iron branches. The main rod is placed in the middle of the puppet's back, and the side rods are placed on the left and right arms. Artists are pulling the strings behind the scenes. The puppet has a painted clay head, a paulownia wood torso, and paper hands and wooden feet.
