Born in Mito as the son of Setsuzan, a samurai of the Mito clan, Sekko absorbed the painting techniques from his father and was deeply influenced by the Southern Song Dynasty art. His studies also embraced Ukiyo-e and Nanga, and he held a profound admiration for the works of Arisumi Mitamura. Sekko's skillful brushwork and compositions brimming with vitality led to a flourishing career during the Meiji and Taisho eras, leaving behind a legacy of vibrant and spirited works. Notably, he participated in the 1882 Meiji 15th year Painting Exposition. Crafted on paper, this piece depicts cranes among pine trees, symbols of longevity and fidelity, rendered with delicate strokes and finesse.
