Jawbone of a Malagasy hippopotamus specimen. An unusual find. Malagasy hippopotamuses used to live on the island of Madagascar, but are now thought to be extinct. These animals were very similar to today's hippos and pygmy hippos. The fossil record suggests that at least one species of hippopotamus lived until about 1,000 years ago.
