No. 83083291
No. 83083291
A superb late 18th century set of 4 custard cups complete with their lids and decorated with gilded borders and foliage
Most pieces are marked Dihl and some
pieces with the joint factory mark Dihl et Guerhard
Founded in 1781 by chemist Christophe Dihl and the Parisian financier Antoine Guérhard, the porcelain factory established a very good reputation within a few years with extraordinarily high-quality products that were almost on a par with the royal manufactory in Sèvres. Since the factory was under the protection of the Duke of Angoulême, it was also allowed to use ground colours that were otherwise exclusively reserved for Sèvres. Guérhard died in 1793 and his widow married Dihl in 1797. This set of custard cups was made in this period at the time of Guérhard's death and before his widow's remarriage, because it bears both the joint factory mark and the Dihl mark
